Hello! My name is Kristy and I am a jewelry designer and a crochet designer. My most important title however, is Mom. I am a mother to two wonderful children who are almost 2 and 4 years old. My previous career was as a teacher. I have always enjoyed seeing children learn. Once I had my daughter though I couldn't imagine paying someone else to take care of her while I took care of other people's children. So I became a stay-at-home mom and I love every crazy moment of it.
One of the perks to staying home is that I am able to work on my creative outlets. I love to knit and crochet and now for the last two years I have been making jewelry. Knitting and crocheting is great during the day when my little ones are awake because I can put it down easily to tend to their needs. I usually save my beading for when they are in bed. Occasionally during my son's nap I can sneak some jewelry time in. My daughter loves to "help" me by arranging my bead jars or separating beads by color or by stringing her own beads to make jewelry like Mommy does.
Now I have to start making money though. I started by making jewelry for myself or for gifts for family. Then I would see a bead sale and go crazy thinking of all the wonderful things I could make. Then I would see a new technique and just have to try it myself. Well now I have over 200 finished pieces and countless boxes and baggies filled with beads to make hundreds more pieces. It is a costly hobby....especially as most of my pieces are made with sterling silver. Thankfully, I have had wonderful comments about my jewelry and have sold some pieces through family showing jewelry to friends.
I had created an etsy store, but did not get any sales and I believe the reason is the poor quality pictures. Anyone who has tried can tell you jewelry is a hard thing to photograph. So I just had professional pictures taken and am about ready to reopen my etsy store. Hopefully the nicer pictures will get me going in the right direction.
I have also seen the trend towards blogs, twitter, and facebook so today I took the plunge and opened an account with all three venues.
My next step is getting out there and showing off my goods, lol. I have a date booked on March 5th at a business to set up a table. I also have two friends who are going to host a home jewelry party in March and April. Hopefully some of the guests will book parties too. If these do well then I will contact some businesses and see if they would be interested in purchasing some items. Perhaps I will do some craft shows later in the year. Possibilities are really opening up! It is an exciting journey and I hope you will come along with me!
